Horse Training for Novices

The Needed Horse Training for Novices

If you are a beginner in the field of horseback riding, the concept of horse training can turn out to be quite intimidating. After all, horses are big; they have their own minds and can even be unpredictable at times. If you are completely willing to spend time in learning how your horse thinks and behave, you can possibly train your horse in different issues safely for both you and your horse. However, there are certain behavioral issues which may need skill and experience to work through. The only way in which you can experience fun in horseback riding is to work through things and be completely aware of what your horse might want to tell you.

The Basics of Horse training

There are generally two ways in training horses. This does not just apply to the horses, but to the owners as well. One is by training through positive reinforcement. This means that the work will behave well towards a reward. The other type of training is negative reinforcement, which pushes the horse to avoid something. Good horse training combines the two methods. Food may be used as a main reward, but it can also include comfort, rest, and safety. A good relationship between the owner and the horse can make the training more effective and easier.

Horses also learn to respond to different cues, just like other animals. For instance, when riders want their horse to move forward, they just squeeze their lower legs. It is a cue, which is responded by a trained horse with moving forward. The cue may be anything, such as the pressure of the hand or heel, a word, or even any type of body language and eye expression. The selection of the cue is not really what is important; consistency is.

The type of horse training that you would like to identify and avoid is where your horse becomes motivated in behaving in a certain way in order to avoid pain. At the end of the day, you would certainly want to make sure that your horse also enjoys the training so as to have fun as well. Most owners even take the time involved in training to establish rapport with their horses.

Things to Consider

Before you end up enjoying the entire horseback riding experience, you may have to patiently wait for some time. After all, behaviors may not perfectly happen overnight. Training your horse to behave well can take time. If you feel that you are not able to do it yourself, you may want to seek assistance from a professional trainer who can guide you through the process. At the end of the day, horse training can bring out the best of your horse, and the fun begins.
